Care and Share is a member of Feeding America, a national network of food banks. Utilizing this national network, Care and Share can procure food from a number of local and national distributors, manufacturers, grocers and growers. Care and Share gets this food into the warehouse by the truckload, breaks down the bulk and provides that food to member agencies.
Healthy Kids Club: A meal and nutrition education program reaching children, Healthy Kids Clubs provide healthy snacks and meals to kids who might otherwise go hungry. In addition, Care and Share provides nutrition education and cooking classes at various member agency locations. There are currently nine Healthy Kids Clubs in El Paso and Pueblo counties. For a current list of Healthy Kids Clubs, please contact Care and Share at 719-528-1247.Nutrition Education: Nutrition and cooking classes are offered at all our Healthy Kids Club sites. In addition, Care and Share also teaches classes for teens, adults, parents and kids at community locations.
Send Hunger Packing: A weekend feeding program that sends backpacks full of food (enough to feed a family of four) home with a child on Friday afternoons. The child then brings back the empty backpack on Monday. For many, this means they can eat during the weekend when school breakfasts and lunches are not available. There are currently 13 Send Hunger Packing sites in El Paso and Pueblo Counties.
Mobile Food Pantry: A Care and Share truck that travels to member agencies in more rural areas of southern Colorado to distribute food directly to those in need.
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP): Federal programs through which surplus commodity foods such as fruit, dairy and cereal are distributed to agencies who serve low-income households in need of assistance.
Food Rescue: A program with local restaurants where safe, healthy food that can no longer be sold or distributed in restaurants and cafes is frozen and donated to Care and Share.
